Five Outstanding Young Texans

I generally reserve my e-mail communiqués for policy issues or opportunities to become more involved in the community. However, today, I hope you will forgive a slightly more personal post.

Each year, the Jaycee's have a series of dinners throughout the United States in which they honor individuals under the age of 40 who have made notable contributions to their cities. The individuals chosen in each city are then considered at the state level and ultimately five outstanding young

Americans are chosen.

As many of you already know, my better half, Melissa, was chosen by the Jaycees as one of the outstanding young Houstonians, along with Jeff Brown, Jane Cummins, John Boettinger, and James Rodriguez. They were recognized at a lovely dinner on July 29th, attended by the Mayor and Lieutenant Governor.

However, the news got better as we were recently informed that Melissa, John Boettinger and Jeff Brown had been named as three of the five outstanding young Texans. They will be recognized at the State Jaycee dinner on September 6 which will be held in Houston this year.

I want to congratulate Melissa, John and Jeff on receiving this honor. Previous recipients have included former President George H.W. Bush, Dr. Denton Cooley, former Lt. Governor William P. Hobby, Jr., Jim Dannenbaum, former U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, and many others. I am, of course, particularly proud of Melissa. Somehow she juggles being a mom to a 12-year old, working on her art history degree at UH, serving on about a half a dozen charity boards and the not inconsiderable task of keeping me on the straight and narrow.

If you are interested in attending the dinner to support Melissa, John and Jeff, you can get more information by calling 832-236-5049 or e-mailing katherine@houstoneventplanning.com.

Once again, congratulations to all.
