Hurricane Information

Long before Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Mr. King while mayor in Kemah he began warning that our region was not ready for a major hurricane. The Galveston Daily News wrote of Mr. King that

"[He] has been the voice in the wilderness warning of a day of reckoning. He's had the courage to deliver an unpopular message. . . . He said all that - repeatedly - before hurricane season started. Hurricane Rita showed that his forecast was on the mark."

As result of his work on this issue, the Governor appointed Mr. King to a statewide task force on Evacuations and the County Judges in our area appointed him to chair a regional task force on problems specifically affecting our area. These task forces issued detailed and exhaustive recommendations.

For his work on hurricane evacuation Mr. King received the 2006 Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Hurricane Conference.
